Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has ordered the immediate withdrawal of VIP security detail to any VIP or honourable members which includes MPs, Senators and Governors suspected involved or suspected to have been involved in crime until cleared by a reputable court of law.
The directive has come at a time when Kenyans are treated to thorough beatings and sometimes even death by the very people they elected to power. While giving the directive, the IG cited the National Police Service Act, the Constitution of Kenya and other regulations which gives directions to the NPS.
Those likely to fall victim of Mutyambai’s whip include Malindi Mp Aisha Jumwa and her Embakasi East counter part Babu Owino who were both charged with attempted murder. Gatundu South Mp had his detail withdrawn yesterday but the reasons are not yet clear. He already has an ongoing assault case and this can easily qualify for the withdrawal. Kimilili Mp and National assembly whip also risks joining this team if a video making rounds on social media showing kicking a young man mercilessly is to be taken into consideration.
Also target are Governors suspected of economic crimes like Sonko, Waititu and Moses Kasaine Lenolkula of Samburu.
This is the first time that VIP security details is withdraw without any political influence. In the run up to the 2017 general election Mombasa Governor Ali Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi, had their security withdrawn for not cooperating with the Jubilee government.
Further to the direction, the IG has also directed, the cancellation of civilian firearm certificates and their guns confiscated.
