Today Kenyans woke up to the news that the young vocal and aggressive Mp Babu Owino had shot some one at a night club in Nairobi. This news has generated a lot of debate both online and on the streets.
In our research and analysis on this trending topic, Uji Moto got an interesting online perspective on gun handling in the Capital city from the famous Ubwogable hit maker Gidi Ogidi of the Gidi Gidi Maji Maji Musical Crew and current presenter at Radio Jambo. Here is his narrative…
I have lived in two different worlds one surrounded by illegal guns and another surrounded by legal guns
Back in the days while growing up in Dandora, I used to hear that so n so ako na rithee(gun). These were my age mates whom we interacted with everyday pale mtaani and it never occurred to me that such close friends were thugs at night but charming friends during the day.
So one day on a new years eve, sis kama vijana wa mtaa we converged at a local reggae joint kuvuka mwaka kimtaa. The music was good tukajinice mpaka 11.55pm when the dj asked everyone to get out of the club for the countdown and fireworks. Weuh!..believe me every revealer except my friends Richard Warui Mwangi and Kareem removed all manner of guns and started shooting in the air. Ati ni fireworks za mwaka mpya. Mai mai mai weuh…tulitoka nduki mpaka kwetu Dandora phase 4. I couldn’t believe that everyone that I knew mtaani had a gun, of coz they were all illegal.
My second experience with guns was at a popular club along Langata Road. There was this guy who was so notorious kuchokoza watu apparently coz he has a gun. So this day akashika dem ya mtu, the guy pleaded with him awache uchokozi akakataa. The guy got irritated and confronted him. He then removed a pistol and pointed at the guy. Weuh everyone scattered for safety. However few minutes later almost everyone came back as the confrontation was going on. I was of coz watching from a distance.
Then all over sudden one guy from the crowd shouted “Unafikiri wewe ndio una bunduki hapa peke yako” mai mai mai..wacha kila mtu atoe bunduki yake…si short gun…sio pistol zile naonanga kwa Rambo….sio kiangowa….weuh the guy was apparently a rogue cop who never knew that he was patronising a club where almost everyone is a licenced gun holder. He was later arrested by flying squad and whisked away.
Am lucky I never got hurt in both incidences but jameni, bunduki sio kitu ya kucheza nayo.
