The Conveners of these year’s All Women Conference have assured the women of Kenya that everything has been to place to ensure their safety is well catered for during the February Conference to be hosted in the Coastal Resort town of Malindi in Kilifi County.

The safety assurance comes in the wake of two Terrorist attacks by Al-Shabaab insurgents that has led to deaths of several people amongst them U.S Soldiers. The first attack was conducted a week ago when a Mombasa Raha Bus was sprayed with bullets leading to death of 3 people. The second attack happened just three days at the joint Kenya-USA Milltary Base in Manda Island. They all happened in Lamu a sister resort city to Malindi.

Getrude Mbeyu who is also the Kilifi County Women Representative and amongst the lead conveners of the conference has revealed to us on an elaborate multi-urgency unit that will be led by the Coast regional commander to ensure the venue of the conference and adjacent areas are highly secured to ensure they give no room for attacks by the terrorist gangs as they mostly target such venues.

The conference will run for three days and will take off from 13th February to 16th February and the theme shall be “The Sister’s Keeper”.

It is not clear why they set the date on the same date as the much publicized Men’s Conference that is expected to be held in Eldoret. This might be a matter of coincidence or design to counter the men’s event.

However Mbeyu said this had got nothing to do with competing with our male counterparts. “Don’t we have people sharing same birth date with our Lord Jesus? So should we also say Christmas is exclusively set for Jesus and non should celebrate their day?” she posed?

Gender experts have however seen this as an attempt by women to show their men that they too can do what they do best.

Amongst the speakers expected in the event are Media Personality Betty Kyalo, Musician Akothee, Mbita Mp Milly Odhiambo, Mandera Women Rep Fatuma Gedi and Alice Wahome the Kandara Mp. In the list is also a surprise male speaker to be known during the event.

As to the ability of Mbeyu to successfully hosting such a major event, local women lobbies have shown a lot of belief in her ability to organize and plan. A good example is her having planned a very successful Embrace Women rally in August 2019 against a well choreographed heavy opposition to the Kieleweke women Rally by Malindi Mp Aisha Jumwa
