Not long ago the women’s place was on the bench in Kenya. They were never seen nor heard of in the key decision making processes. This mainly due to the deep rooted African customary practices that had set them second class persons.

However, Kenya has seen a radical shift from this theory in the recent past especially in the political font. Previously Kenya divided into regional grouping and each lead by it leader which was a preserve of the male gender. But if things are to be viewed from the post 2017 ear, then for sure, the it shall be business unusual as the Kenyan women are shaping the political future of Kenya and in 2022 it shall be “Mama amesema!”

Lets do a quick check.

From the Sea shore, we get the Mijikenda’s iron lady whose features squarely fit the colonial hero Mekatilili wa Menza- Aisha Jumwa. The Malindi Mp is a no nonsense go getter who in the resent past fielded a titanic battle in ward in his constituency that saw the entire ODM brigade flock the ward to counter her political influence and maneuvers. Though she lost the seat but she won the war against ODM. Not only is she eloquent in speech and  gifted mobilizer, but also a respected figure in the Mijikenda Nation especially by the women in the grassroots and is currently the front runner to the gubernatorial seat in Kilifi after Amason Kingi term expires in 2022. She is expected to have fierce battle against Lands CAS Gedion Mungaro and Kilifi North Mp Owen Baya who are the most serious contenders to the seat. Nationally, she is a great mover of the Inua Mama initiative of the Tanga Tanga

Kandara MP Alice Wahome is could be crowned Wangu wa Makere a title that has for long been held by former Gichugu MP and NARC-K Leader Martha Karua. She stand out from the crowd in region where political dominance has historically been male. Ms Wahome is the National leader of Inua Mama Initiative. Just the other she held the bulls by its horns by spitting vernom right on the face of Uhuru Kenyatta the figure head of Mt. Kenya region and the President of the Republic of Kenya. In kenya’s history no one, either male or female could correct the president moreso if they came from the same region. Only Joho and Kingi from the Coast managed that during the 2017 general elections.

The Mountain Region is currently considered orphaned there having no clear heir to the thrown with the term of president Kenyatta coming to an end. So far it Alice and Anne Waiguru whohave emerged as the team leaders of of the two major political blocks in the region, Tanga Tanga and Kieleweke. The Kirinyaga Governor is also a force to reckon with in the region. She leads the National Team Embrace that runs the Kieleweke women league and a strong proponent of the handshake between Raila Odinda and Uhuru Kenyatta that led to the birth of the BBI.

In the Lake region is Mama County as she is famously referred to as. The Homabay Women Rep Gladys Wanga is not just any other women. In the run up to the 2017 election, she was the team leader of the NASA Presidential campaign in Nyanza and a visible figure in the NRM resistance that even costed her a slot in the prestigious Parliamantary Service Commission-PSC. In Nynza where Baba amesema is the slogan of the day, she takes the second fiddle as Mama. She has cut out a nitch above here role a a women leader but as a National fugure beyond Nyanza politics. She is the vice chair of the Embrace and the senior member of the BBI steering committee. In 2022 she’s seen as the lead contender in the Homabay Gubernatorial race.

Busia Women leader is currently serving her second term. All her colleagues whom they served with during the initiation of devolution in 2013 did not make it through even past the Party Nomination stage. Florence Mutua is arguably the lady that makes the women of Mulembe felt on the table. Unlike the other regions the Men in Mulembe have not let go of their rights on the table.

The cheeky pastoral girl from Wajir Fatuma Gedi stands out whenever the pastoral region is mentioned. She has been in the forefront of not only fighting for their rights on the ground but also in the house . sometime back she received slap on her chick from a colleague for standing firm on the ground. In a region that hosts the leader of Majority and considered a Tangatanga zone, she has been able to propel the handshake and BBI ideologies and hosted several high powered delegations across the vast region.

In the Capital Nairobi, the County Speaker Miss Beatrice Elachi truly defines a strong tower. Her story  is a story of zeal and resilience. In a City that is feared in East and Central Africa, she has been able to make a name and shape its directions. She shall overcome impeachment attempts, forceful evection from office and attempts to life. Elachi is currently the highest figure in the administration of the Capital with the court orders against the Governor and with no Deputy in office.

Finally, I would want to write about this last Powerpuff girl from Ukambani. She is Kenya’s iconic lady. A figure in democracy and liberation. She has transcended beyond her region and nation and beyond the borders of Africa. The Kitui Governor is surely the Mama Kenya. Mama Charity Kaliku Ngilu has seen it all and has never faded out in the politics and leadership of the Nation.

If by any chance these power puff girls decide to unite into one united block, the surely be prepared for the women takeover of the republic of Kenya!
